Republican Generic Ballot Woes Continue
With the 2026 midterm elections just five months away, Republicans are facing an increasingly dire situation – and it appears to be growing worse by the day. In the last 30 days, the GOP has lost 3.3% support in the RCP Average of the Generic Congressional Vote.
Their current standing of 40.3% is the lowest of Trump’s second term by almost a full percentage point.
Meanwhile, over the same time period, Democrats have extended their lead in the Generic Congressional ballot by more than 2 points, and their current margin of +7.6% is the largest of this cycle.

As a point of comparison, on this date in 2018, Republicans were at 39.8% and trailed Democrats by 3.2% in the Generic ballot. Democrats went on to win the national vote by 8.4% and picked up 40 seats and control of the House.
Five months is an eternity in politics, and Republicans could still turn things around. But they’re running out of time.
